Heart Chamber Orchestra @ FILE 2010

The Austrians again… well it feels a bit strange to take part on such a big international Festival and meet artists from your country everywhere… I think about 10% of the artists participating at FILE Festival are Austrians somehow – even if the most of them have chosen to live somewhere else. Like Erich Berger who is living in Helsinki and Peter Votava who is living in Berlin. Well, i guess such Festivals are anyway not that kind of patriotic or nationalistic events like football games or ski worldcups  ;-)  But the international context of such Festivals and the country next to your name reminds you about your origins, even if the new media art scene feels like a family from outer space. If you have such a lot of common interests and ideas like in such a community, distances and borders just dont exist. I wish everybody could feel the same !

But actually i wanted to write about the Heart Chamber Orchestra, who got the second prize in the electronic sonority category at the FILE PRIX LUX Award. And as i liked the performance very much – i have to tell you, that they really deserve it.

Also known as the audiovisual collective Terminalbeach they upgraded there work by adding a whole live playing orchestra. Sounds like a challenge. Right, but the way they are working with the orchestra is fantastic. They connect each of the musicians with heart rate monitors in order to work with their inner metronom and transform this data into a fantastic performance. Relational Lights @ FILE Festival 2010

I had the pleasure to get Ernesto Klar for a short interview. He is an artist from Venezuela, living in New York and won the first prize in the FILE PRIX LUX competition in the category of interactive installations. The FILE PRIX LUX Award took place for the first time this year and had three categories: interactive installations, electronic sonority and digital language.

“Luzes relacionais” (Relational Lights) is an interactive audio-visual installation that explores our relationship with the expressional-organic character of “space”. The installation uses light, sound, haze, and a custom-software system to create a morphing, three-dimensional light-space in which spectators actively participate, manipulating it with their presence and movements. “Luzes relacionais” is a hommáge to the work and aesthetic inquiry of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark.

TrikeDoubleThree is a piece of performative dance in conjunction with audio visual elements by Christine Gaigg (2nd nature) and Bernhard Lang.
The four dancers on stage, perform on sound panels by being video taped, the sound and video is sampled with the “visual loop generator” and reprojected on the screens in the middle of the stage (stage design: Philipp Harnoncourt). As a viewer you might loose the oversight of what is created by whom, is the machine following the human dancers or vice versa?

But somehow, it’s all about loops. We had the chance to talk to Christine Gaigg and Bernhard Lang, the creators of this piece where dance meets media art.

Spectral Continuum Berlin 2010 by Charlemagne Palestine

Charlemagne Palestine !! an extraordinary person – an experience you´ll never forget ! Not only his performance at the Französischer Dom is remarkable – we managed to get an interview before his gig. he is an epiphany himself !  of course we can´t transport the full experience of an organ which is resonating with the audience and the dom ! but check the video to get at least a taste….

Façade-Play and Body-Sound

“Signs and Signals” @ Ars Electronica Festival 09Last weekend, at the FM4 co-hosted multimedia performance “Signs and Signals”, artist duo freyluft visualized sounds on the surface of the Ars Electronica Center (AEC).

“Any heavy-handed block can be transformed to a magical zone with an illuminated façade”, wrote Gerlinde Lang on the FM4 Website. Now, for sure, the new Ars Electronica Center (AEC) at its location on the banks of the Danube in Linz, does not qualify as a “heavy-handed block”, a magical zone it became nonetheless. This happened courtesy of artist duo freyluft, who, last weekend in cooperation with FM4, made 40.000 LEDs dance on the façade of the AEC, in their performance “Signs and Signals”.

The sounds involved were provided by DJs and live-musicians, but, notably, also by media artist Ulla Rauter, who utilized her own body as an instrument. With an electric violin bow she stroked her right forearm, while her hand was fitted with electric contacts. “The skin serves as a conductor. When the violin bow touches the skin, the circuit is closed”, says Rauter: “It is a sort of biofeedback.”

The guys of Pikselfest in Norway are now accepting proposals in the categories installation, a/v performance, presentations and workshops. As ever – ” Projects realised using Max/Msp/Jitter, Flash/Shockwave, Final Cut or any other proprietary software does NOT qualify, and should not be submitted!”

Next years transmediale also published the call for entries.

I couldn’t find something like a theme or a subject – the next step after getting rid of the categories a few years ago? Would make sense imho, artistic production usually doesn’t care too much about festival themes anyway..

Hermann Josef Hack: The whole world is a Climate Refugee Camp

With climate change we all become nomads.

Monday, January 26th 2009, the german artist Hermann Josef Hack arranged 200 small tents on the square in front of the Brandenburger Tor to build a miniature version of a refugee camp, the world climate refugee camp. Hack’s art refers to current political issues, for him there is no distinction between art and politics. Furthermore he wants to get in direct contact with the public audience instead of presenting his work in institutional art spaces like museums. That’s why he presents his work in public spaces and likes to watch the reaction of the pedestrians, “the very ones who caused the changes that made people refugees in the first place”.
