But actually i wanted to write about the Heart Chamber Orchestra, who got the second prize in the electronic sonority category at the FILE PRIX LUX Award. And as i liked the performance very much - i have to tell you, that they really deserve it.

Also known as the audiovisual collective Terminalbeach they upgraded there work by adding a whole live playing orchestra. Sounds like a challenge. Right, but the way they are working with the orchestra is fantastic. They connect each of the musicians with heart rate monitors in order to work with their inner metronom and transform this data into a fantastic performance. But listen to their explanations and interesting details yourself:

“Luzes relacionais” (Relational Lights) is an interactive audio-visual installation that explores our relationship with the expressional-organic character of “space”. The installation uses light, sound, haze, and a custom-software system to create a morphing, three-dimensional light-space in which spectators actively participate, manipulating it with their presence and movements. “Luzes relacionais” is a hommáge to the work and aesthetic inquiry of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark.

The Mapping Festival is dedicated to VJing and to the task of combining moving images with contemporary cultures. Thus multiplying the events which animate the town and bestowing itself to the Genevans and international visitors.
Formed in 2005 by Modul8 conceptors and Zoo/Usine, The Mapping is in search of all passionate of real time image use, amateurs of electronic cultures, conviviality and discovery.
The festival is a true laboratory for the VJing discipline, offering both novices and professionals the possibility to experiment and encounter. This unique aspect gives the festival a world-wide reputation in the VJ-community as a meeting point you just have to visit.

Sosolimited having a live performance at transmediale.10 called “The LongConversation”. Eric Gunther, Justin Manor and John Rothenberg are visualizing the conference talk in real time for about 12 hours. We were getting them for a short talk about their experiences with their artwork ReConstitution and their performance today.

ReConstitution was a live remix of the 2008 US Presidential debates performed by Sosolimited in Boston, New York, and Washington DC. This movie shows highlights from the performances and gives an overview of selected transformations.

In the Award Ceremony on Saturday, 6 February, Barbara Kisseler (Permanent Secretary of the State of Berlin) and the members of both juries announced the winners of both the transmediale Award 2010 and the Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2010!

Canadian artist Michelle Teran is the winner of the transmediale Award 2010. Her work Buscando al Sr. Goodbar was awarded with a prize of 6,000 Euros.
A Distinction worth 2,000 Euros was given to the Americans Aaron Koblin and Daniel Massey for their work Bicycle Built For Two Thousand.

The Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2010, also worth 2,000 Euros, was given to biologist and artist Warren Neidich (us/de) for his research project Neuropower.

During the Olympic Games in 2008 James Powderly traveled to Beijing in order to support the group “Students for a free Tibet”. The Idea was to go there and do a L.A.S.E.R. Tag performance. Before he was able to do so he was arrested and sentenced to 10 days of prison. When the games were over he was set free and sent home, where he decided to publish the story as a comic book together with Jihoi Lee. In the interview he tells us about the time in prison and the comic book that was exhibited at the Blackriver Festival in Vienna.

THX to the very charming and synergetic art-gang”freyluft” (monika freyer und philipp luftensteiner) we can proudly present: “Signs and Signals” the directors cut! It’s a recording of the whole performance, taken from the vis-á-vis Danube bank.

The project:

1. The Building:
The Ars Electronica Center (AEC) is a center for the electronic arts, run by Ars Electronica and situated in Linz, Austria. It’s located at the northern side of the Danube, on the right side of the Nibelungenbrücke (witch has a pretty interesszing history itself). The building is also known as the “Museum of the Future“. The museum has six floors filled with creative work from hi-tech laboratories all over the world.

2. The “new” Building:
The new building includes a multi-level structure adjacent to the existing facility and then wrapping the entire ensemble in a glass shell, the AEC’s spectacular 5,100-m2 LED façade. The result is a holistic entity, which can be used like a gigantic kind of screen.

3. The Event:
Matthias Schoenauer and Sebastian Schlachter from Austrian radio station fm4 produced “Signs and Signals. Together with the artgroup “freyluft” they developed the concept of a audio/ visual performance including the technical possibilities of this special environment.
It was extraordinary !!! But see for yourself and enjoy!
Other artists included are: Vocalist Mani Obeya, skin-conductor-violinist Ulla Rauter, Patrick Pulsinger and Richard Eigner.

Atsushi Wakimoto, the curator of the Japan Media Arts Festival walks us trough the viennese exhibition of the Festival which is running until 20th of September.

“Any heavy-handed block can be transformed to a magical zone with an illuminated façade”, wrote Gerlinde Lang on the FM4 Website. Now, for sure, the new Ars Electronica Center (AEC) at its location on the banks of the Danube in Linz, does not qualify as a “heavy-handed block”, a magical zone it became nonetheless. This happened courtesy of artist duo freyluft, who, last weekend in cooperation with FM4, made 40.000 LEDs dance on the façade of the AEC, in their performance “Signs and Signals”.

The sounds involved were provided by DJs and live-musicians, but, notably, also by media artist Ulla Rauter, who utilized her own body as an instrument. With an electric violin bow she stroked her right forearm, while her hand was fitted with electric contacts. “The skin serves as a conductor. When the violin bow touches the skin, the circuit is closed”, says Rauter: “It is a sort of biofeedback.”

Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, eine Computermaus zu zerstören. Zehn davon hat das japanische Künstlerduo exonemo in der aus Videos und einem Computerprogramm bestehenden Installation “DanmatsuMouse” gesammelt. Einmal saust ein Vorschlaghammer auf das Plastikgadget, ein anderes Mal fräst sich die Klinge eines Küchenmessers durch das Zeigegerät.

Ein Computerprogramm sorgt dafür, dass die reale Maus auf dem Desktop die “Todeserfahrung” ihres gefilmten Pendants nachvollziehen kann und gleichsam final zuckt. Zu sehen ist “DanmatsuMouse” bei der Ausstellung des Coded-Cultures-Festivals, das derzeit im Wiener MuseumsQuartier stattfindet und japanische und österreichische Positionen in der Medienkunst einander gegenüberstellt.

Zum Auftakt der futurezone.ORF.at-Serie “Futurezone Galerie” hat Matthias Tarasiewicz vom Coded-Cultures-Kuratorenteam Ella Esque vom Wiener Medienkunstblog tagr.tv durch die Ausstellung geführt. Die beiden unterhalten sich unter anderem über Martin Pichlmairs Arbeit “Bagatelle Concrete”, die einen Flipper zur Soundmaschine ummodelt, und über Yuko Mohris Installation “The Execution of Mary”, die elektronische Geräte zweckentfremdet.

Coded Cultures endet am Sonntag. Die Festivalausstellung ist noch bis zum 7. Juni im freiraum des Wiener MuseumsQuartiers zu sehen.

Next years transmediale also published the call for entries.

I couldn’t find something like a theme or a subject - the next step after getting rid of the categories a few years ago? Would make sense imho, artistic production usually doesn’t care too much about festival themes anyway..

…well, that last question of Jaime put me into a difficult situation: we agreed to ask everyone the same set of questions, so i either had to cut out jamie - or break up the concept that we all agreed on.
I decided to go on with the interview, and even though i didn’t manage to phrase a proper question i think it was a good decision: What followed were the most interesting views on the term creativity i heard in a long time, so even though it’s unedited i recommend the second part of the interview:

Das Wesen des Kapitalismus ist die kreative Zerstörung, sagte der österreichische Ökonom Joseph Schumpeter schon in den dreißiger Jahren. Seine Theorie vom kreativen Unternehmertum feierte in den neunziger Jahren kreative Urständ: die New Economy, man erinnere sich. Junge Burschen und Mädchen mit feschen Frisuren, modischen Turnschuhen und krausen Ideen wurden plötzlich zum Ideal des neuen Unternehmertyps.

Stichwort: Sie hätten ja auch Künstler werden können, aber sie wollten was verdienen. Alte Wahrheiten des Wirtschaftslebens galten auf den Kopf gestellt, Unternehmen begannen ihre besten Produkte zu verschenken, um fiktive Marktanteile an “Eyeballs” in der Ökonomie der Aufmerksamkeit zu gewinnen. Auf der Achse zwischen Silicon Valley und Market Street, San Francisco, im Herzen der ehemaligen Gegenkultur der 1960er Jahre entwickelte sich der “coole Arbeitsplatz”. Ehemalige Fertigungs- und Lagerhallen wurden in Großraumbüros umgewandelt, deren architektonische Anlage bereits flache Hierarchien symbolisierte. Hier arbeiteten Menschen, die an der Garderobe ihr Skateboard deponierten, unter Kopfhörern Grunge oder Hip Hop hörten und Cappuccino Frappe Latte mit Limettengeschmack und Soyamilch, koffeinfrei, tranken, vor allem aber eines taten: sie identifizierten sich mit ihren Jobs. Die Arbeit war nicht mehr eine entfremdete Tätigkeit, die man sozusagen neben sich stehend ausführte. Jeder, ob Chef, Angestellte, Freelancer oder Praktikanten wollte ihr bestes geben, neue, glänzende Dinge machen, einfallsreich, geschickt, ja sogar genial sein. Und dafür arbeitete man dann, sozusagen frei und selbstbestimmt, bis zum Umfallen1. (more…)

“The Earth is the cradle of humanity, however, it is impossible to spend one’s entire life in a cradle.” This quote from Constantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, a Russian rocket engineer, is the starting point for Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand’s speculative performance on the suspension of gravity. The reduction of gravitational effects may evoke emancipatory associations, yet such conditions predominate in our universe. In a spacecraft, among the most efficient ways to transport nearly all gases, liquids, and powders, is by means of a phenomenon known as acoustic levitation. In Domnitch and Gelfand’s ‘Sonolevitation‘, slivers of gold are acoustically suspended by a standing wave. A microphone monitors the slivers’ modulation of the levitatory wave: the slightest change in the sliver’s position has highly audible consequences. Sonolevitation is the first in a series of projects by the artists which explore microgravitational, near-vacuous environments. The capacity to create artworks in such spaces, permits the actuation of altogether unforeseen optical and acoustic processes. Especially for this performance, the artists have joined forces with TeZ, who creates a live quadraphonic setting of Sonolevitation. (transmediale.de)

Reynolds’s video installation Six Appartments is a poetic narration of resignation and decline which documents the life of six people in their apartments. The inhabitants live isolated, unaware of each other, without drama – they eat, sleep, watch television – even though their lives are overshadowed by mass media generated problems of the larger world and the upcoming ecological crisis. Their connection to the world is located elsewhere: It can be found in the microscopic process of decomposition of their bodies, food and living spaces, and in their passive existence towards consumption which, with every moment, brings them closer to their deaths. isuma.tv is an independent platform for indigenous film-makers, exchanging traditional knowledge, as well as news and footage documenting an aboriginal way of life. Paul Quassa, sitting in the futuristic McLuhan Salon, tells us why new technologies were quickly absorbed by aboriginal tribes, how traditional knowledge about nature and the environment can help us to deal with an impending climate change and how isuma.tv exactly works.

Everybody uses mobile devices and computers. Less people know you need a very rare mineral called “tantal” to fabricate microchips this size, soon making it more precious than gold. This very moment, cruel wars are fought over this metal in Congo, resulting in more than 3.6 million deaths to date. The tantalum memorial was created in rememberence of this wars´ victims. Wir stehen vor dem Haupteingang und rauchen. Drinnen Verordnung, eh klar. Es ist eiskalt aber sonnig. Gleich wird uns der künstlerische Leiter der
Transmediale, Stephen Kovats, abholen und mit seinem Wagen in die kanadische Botschaft, genauer in den Marshall McLuhan Salon bringen. Dort werden wir mit dem renommierten Inuit-Politiker Paul Quassa bekannt gemacht. Das Projekt, das wir mit ihm besprechen nennt sich isuma.tv, eine Videoplattform im Internet, die primär für den Austausch indigener Filmemacher ins Leben gerufen wurde. Das klingt abwegiger als es eigentlich ist. Bald wird uns Paul Quassar erzählen, dass besonders Nomadenvölker sehr schnell neue Technologien für sich beansprucht haben. Weniger schriftlich als visuell orientiert, bietet ihnen das Netz die optimale Form des Austausches für traditionelles Wissen, aber auch Nachrichten und Alltägliches. Nicht von ungefähr treffen wir Quassar im McLuhan Salon.

Das einst von McLuhan prophezeite “Global Village” wurde bei isuma.tv nicht bloß zur Praxis. Es ist beinahe dessen Überaffirmation: Über modernste Technologien können so wissenschaftliche Diskurse über Klimawandel mit idigener Naturweisheit abgeglichen werden. Näheres erzählten uns die Beteiligten selbst, von Angesicht zu Angesicht – und über den Bildschirm erzählen sie es so der ganzen Welt.

We are waiting for Steven Kovats, the artistic director of the transmediale 09. He personally is going to drive us to the Canadian embassy, where the Marshall McLuhan Salon is located and we are about to meet the famous Inuit spokesman Paul Quassar to hear more about isuma.tv, a project director Kovats is very proud to present at this years transmediale. isuma.tv, as we are about to learn, is an independent platform for indigenous film-makers, exchanging traditional knowledge, as well as news and footage documenting an aboriginal way of life. Post Global Warming Survival Kit consists of a two-channel projection and shows infrared images of the North Sea as a post-apocalyptic landscape that the observer can only see by using a night-vision device. Dourmana portrays a dystopian scenario: a “nuclear winter” initiated by political groups or governments in order to solve the problem of global warming and the melting of the polar icecaps.

The installation aims to be a believable, technological fiction of a future in which human sensory experience has adapted. Without the technology posited within the Post Global Warming Survival Kit, we would be blind. With this in mind, the project asks us to consider our approach to environmental pollution and ecological destruction.

Über die Bedrohlichkeit und darüber, dass es gemeinsamen und koordinierten Anstrengungen bedarf, sich dieser zu stellen, sind sich die Teilnehmer einig und im jeweiligen Aufgabenbereich findet jeder auch eigene Worte dieser Dringlichkeit entgegen zu kommen. Bei Hack liest man auf einem seiner, vor dem Brandenburger Tor aufgestellten Miniaturzelte von „social coolness against global warming“, Wiemann spricht von Nachhaltigkeit als Entwicklungsprinzip und der Notwendigkeit eines Bewusstseins für Ethik und stellt diesen Anspruch an alle Bereiche wissenschaftlicher, industrieller, politischer und künstlerischer Forschung. Michael Müller, der sich seit den Achtzigerjahren dem Thema der Nachhaltigkeit in zahlreichen Vorträgen und Publikationen gewidmet hat (nachzulesen auf seiner website), bringt das Problem am Beispiel der Kohlendioxid-Emissionen auf den Punkt: Ab dem Zeitpunkt, an dem sich die CO2-Konzentration der Erdatmosphäre auf den Grenzwert von 450ppm (0,45 Promille aller Luftmoleküle) eingependelt hat ist eine Klimaerwärmung von 2°C nicht mehr zu verhindern – auch wenn sich diese erst Jahre später einstellen wird. Es geht also darum, einer berechneten Entwicklung vorzubeugen, deren Ausmaße sich unserem Bewusstsein zum momentanen Zeitpunkt noch entziehen. Und welche Verbindung öffentlich tätiger Bereiche wäre besser zur Schärfung dieses Bewusstseins geeignet als die von Kunst, Politik und Industrie?!

Neuen Medien und aktueller Technologie wird in diesem Zusammenhang eine besondere Rolle zugestanden. Nicht nur als Informationsquelle, auch als Ermöglicher neuartiger Erfahrungen (Wiemann erwähnt das mit artcircolo entstandene Projekt „calling the glacier“) stehen diese im Dienst „für ein anderes kulturelles, wirtschaftliches, industrielles Verständnis, das globale Zusammenhänge berücksichtigt und in den Prozess der Ideenfindung integriert“ (Müller). Weiters fördert der Zugang zu neuen Medien die individuelle Verantwortung, die laut Wiemann mit einer gemeinschaftlichen Rationalität einhergehen sollte. (Mein Handy kennt meinen Energieverbrauch und berechnet auf Knopfdruck meinen persönlichen Beitrag zum CO2-Ausstoß…)

Wird nun mit local in „think local – act global“ entgültig das Individuum adressiert? Es drängt sich auf, was bereits der alte Luhmann gesagt hat: „Die Vergangenheit ist in jedem Falle unabänderlich und die Zukunft in jedem Falle unbekannt“. Die Zeit des Handelns ist auf jeden Fall jetzt.

Interview with Hermann Josef Hack. German version only.

Monday, January 26th 2009, the german artist Hermann Josef Hack arranged 200 small tents on the square in front of the Brandenburger Tor to build a miniature version of a refugee camp, the world climate refugee camp. Hack’s art refers to current political issues, for him there is no distinction between art and politics. Furthermore he wants to get in direct contact with the public audience instead of presenting his work in institutional art spaces like museums. That’s why he presents his work in public spaces and likes to watch the reaction of the pedestrians, “the very ones who caused the changes that made people refugees in the first place”.

Because of it’s performative nature, only the documentation of the project was exhibited in the O.K. - therefore another project of Pollstream was shown - apparently for the first time in a public space. Smoking Lamp (2006) requires a smoking audience - on most places on earth this is a vital problem, but not in Linz. Simple but very nice installation:

A flash is mounted on the back of a SLR camera and connected to a flash sensor. As soon as a flash from another camera is recognized, the flash goes of, shines through the the dia thats inserted in the camera and projects the image for a few milliseconds - just long enough to be recognized by other camera that triggered the flash initially.

This happened after the AFP reported on Friday, that “Beijing police said Thursday it had handed out 10-day detention terms to six foreigners believed by an overseas activist group to be pro-Tibet campaigners involved in Olympic protests this week.”

The work, “The Green Chinese Lantern,” uses a 400 milliwatt handheld green laser with micro-stencils to beam simple messages and images up to three stories high on surfaces such as billboards, buildings, and bridges. The Laser Stencil technology was developed in conjunction with Students for a Free Tibet.

Before that, Powderly and other members of the Graffiti Research Lab were dis-invited from Synthetic Times, a new media art exhibition at Beijing’s National Media Art Museum of China, due to their uncompromising stance on freedom of expression.

James is proud to have been kicked out of the Synthetic Times new media art exhibition in Beijing because he wouldn’t censor his little art project. James wonders why organizations like the MoMA, Parsons, Eyebeam, Ars Electronica and many other arts and cultural institutions around the world who claim to support free speech and expression would participate in a show like this. But they did! It was after being kicked to the curb by the show’s curator that James connected with Students for a Free Tibet and decided he would go to China anyway and do what he though was right in support of Tibet, Taiwan, free speech and the people of China. James lives, if indeed he is alive, in the County of Kings, Brooklyn, and teaches at the Communication Design and Technology program at Parsons the New School for Design. Beijing: Activists detained after lighting up “Free Tibet” LED Throwies banner near Olympics site from Students for a Free Tibet on Vimeo.

Also yesterday, five activists with Students for a Free Tibet were detained after displaying a banner that spelled out “Free Tibet” in LED Throwies, the open source technology pioneered by the Grafitti Research Lab and popularized online and worldwide. This brings the number of Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) protestors detained in Beijing to 42.

Glow is a dusk to dawn performance and media art festival which took place for the first time on July 19th 2008 in Los Angeles. It is envisioned as a museum without walls, a way of bringing contemporary art to the public. “Media art meets the masses”, that sort of thing. The public in question for this particular event consisted of 200,000 people passing through a stretch of beach and an old historic pier all in a single night. The massive scale of the event probably left many of its commissioned artists wondering how they could ever go back to the narrow confines of the gallery again.

My favorite installation is by New York based Taiwanese American Artist Shih Chieh Huang whose recent exhibitions have taken him to the Venice Biennale, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Manhattan and the Shanghai MOCA to name only a few. His process-orientated work transforms mass produced objects and everyday detritus into kinetic sculptures which seem infused with life.

Before receiving the commission from Glow, he happened to be doing a two-month residency at the Smithsonian in Washington which allowed him to study the Smithsonian’s collection of iridescent marine life forms. For Glow, he filled the walk way under the historic Santa Monica pier with slow-moving sculptures of marine creatures intricately constructed from zip-ties, power adapters, plastic bags, wires and plastic tubes… To me his work is always very much about material. There is a lot of aesthetic discipline in the way he juxtaposes one piece of recycled waste and the next.

I missed most of the works displayed that night, but I especially regret not seeing Usman Haque’s ‘Primal Source’ up close. A giant water screen is conjured up on the sand. The sound created by the nearby audience constantly changes the light patterns projected onto the water screen. At some point during the night there were thousands of people surrounding this piece. If Glow is all about public spectacles, then this was certainly the showpiece. Usman Haque has a background in architecture and has been responsible for a number of impressive large-scale interactive installations recently. Check out his website for more.

You can just make out Usman Haque’s upside down waterfall on one side of this picture, the bright spot on the other side is my piece Moon Theater created in collaboration with Michael Kontopoulos and based on code by Andres Colubri. Moon Theater is designed to address issues of scale and social performance in a public setting. In the context of Glow, it is realized as an opportunity for communication and expression between members of a large crowd.

The piece successfully sustained a community around itself throughout the night, transforming strangers into collaborative performers.

Shadow puppets are mapped onto the movement of people’s hands and projected onto our artificial moon using code written in Processing.

The theme at Sonarmatica this year is future-past cinema. Beautiful pieces of pre-cinematic technology are resurrected and displayed side by side with some very slick new media art. This really brings an interesting historical perspective to the exhibition. I think it’s a good idea to be humbled by the old timers now and then. For example, Alvaro Cassinelli’s ‘Boxed Ego’ which exploits stereoscopic lenses faces a large 18th century stereoscope. Two centuries can be traversed by a few steps. ‘Boxed Ego’ invites the audience to peer into a box to see a tiny three dimensional video of him/her self in the act of peeping. The video is deliberately delayed which creates an interesting awareness of time. The theme of self-voyeurism is unsurprisingly very popular with the festival goers.

Marnix de Nijs’s “The Beijing Accelerator” is quite an experience. A joy stick is used to synchronize the movement of the chair with the movement of the city scape on screen. Giddy, disorienting and fun, it’s tempting to ignore what the artist intends and just spin as fast as possible while trying not to fall off.

“Stage Fright” uses the simple mechanism of a swing to make a simple narrative unfold. The participant must swing as high as possible in order to see what happens next. The project is developed at the Medialab-Prado during the Interativos workshop with a team of awesome collaborators. I especially want to thank Valeria Marraco, Sytse Wierenga and Emanuel Andel for creating the video.

One of my favorite pieces at SonarMatica is Julien Maire’s performance “DemiPas”. It features a converted projector that uses slides which are intricate little machines in themselves. The complicated mechanical movement of the ’slides’ animate different scenes and push the story forward. It was whimsical and moving, I strongly recommend seeing it. It worked nicely with Takashi Kawashima’s shadow puppetry performance “Takashi’s Seasons” which mixes the traditional and the new.

Looks cool, but actually it’s not: the fact that the flashes are going off during 4-7 frames means that we have a rang of about a 1/3 sec within the cameras are releasing… this is a raw example of ne of our first test shootings:

Simone showed me two more really helpful things: what you can see here is called wire wrapping. It’s a technique to create circuits w/o soldering, and it looks great You have to use wrap pins that you simply beat into the board, then you use a little stick to put the wire around the pin, which is actually faster done than soldering.

Also Simone showed me a kind of “Bible” for people hacking around with circuits: The Cmos Cookbook. This seem to be really useful, it contains all cmos components available including description, picture and explanation how to connect them.

We finished all the mounting pieces and found a place inside mataderos where we can set up the installation and leave it there untouched until the end of the workshop. The only minus-point of the day: all the cameras have 2b rewired, electronics don’t work as easy as we thought: It’s not possible to just wire all the release-switches parallel - every one has to have it’s own opto-isolator plus pull-down resistor attached to it. Karolina is actually going crazy resoldering all the switches, cameras, resistors and opto-isolators…

So now we’re starting to use the arduino to pass values to processing and change the displayed image. Therefore we change the ” Serial.println(inputPin)” which would print the received value and change it to “serial.print (val,BYTE)” which will sore the received value in a Byte (0-255) which can then be read by processing. What followed then was good and bad at the same time. On the on hand some reactions were like: “Yeah, well, i didn’t get your project of all - but why don’t you go for this or that instead..”, which was more annoying then helpful, because at some point i had the feeling that some critiques just wanted to push the project in the direction that they felt like at the moment… On the other hand it was really helpful because we figured out a way to make a mounting that’s actually realizable and gives us the possibility to fine-tune the adjustments a little bit within the “fixed” camera.

1st day: We started to break up some PDA readers that use the same interface like the single-use cameras.

The plan is to connect 30 cameras to one arduino in order to release the shutter simultanously. To do so we need to extend the outputs of the arduino, which originally has only 13 outputs. So, to get the ammount of output needed we built a Serial to Parallel Shifting-Out with a 74HC595 chip as explained on the arduino hompepage.

Since the hardware tasks of the day were fulfilled with excellence we started a test shooting with one of the cameras. Our testsetup was a half circle with a radius of 3.2m, with marks every 20cm.

Esther Polak: Sand Spiral Machine

The idea is to build a robot that uses solar power in order to move that is nonstop drawing a line of sand. When it has collected enough power it will move: When the sun rises, the distances the robot can make will rise because the amount of light that hits the solar panel increases. The line of sand will visualize this process.

A processing application will include polygons. this polygons are used to create images of pets, which can then be printed out to create your own animation generator at home - the idea is to make it easy to build, in order to animate people to build it at home.

The idea is to have a magic mirror that paints masks and animations in your face, so you’re not looking at a screen but at image of yourself. in order to do this we will use a spy mirror and project behind that to mix the mirrored image and the projection. we will use camera tracking to determine the position of the face/ projection. So the most work will be in face recognition and tracking on one side, on the other side to design and implement the animation.

Karolina will use cheap “one-way” cameras and hack them that each camera is wired to an arduino to press the shutter release automatet and simutaniously and that it’s actually possible to download pictures from these cameras. The goal is to creat a cheap virtual camera and then build an installation with this.

The box will be hanging on the ceiling over user’s head, so she can freely rotate it on the space.”

The workshop aims to use open hardware and software tools to create prototypes that explore the relations between machines and humour/laughter

Laughter is a psychological phenomenon that is a human characteristic. Frequently associated with fun, play and pleasure, it serves as a way of communicating moods that are not always positive or pleasurable. Laughter can be intelligent or stupid, liberating, forced, nervous, contagious or sinister. The incongruent and the unexpected provoke laughter; however, depending on the context, they can also cause terror. Laughter is also a social phenomenon. To be shared, a common cultural milieu is required. As a result, it can reinforce belonging to a group and also exclude “others”.

I was invited to take part in the workshop, so i booked the flights and here i am! The workshop will start tomorrow in the Medialab-Prado and i will take chance to finally use tagr.tv as a workshop documentation plattform and try to spam the blog with an everyday update of the workshop.

Examples for projects that had been realized during recent Interaktivos? workshops are for example Chris Sugrue’s Delicate Boundaries or Pablo Valbuena’s AugmentedSculpture which i think was one of the most thrilling works exhibited at the Ars Elektronica 2007.

Then the microphone gave completely up, this youtube video provides better audio quality of this scene.. within a minute i was amazed by Eva Jantschitsch’s performance and voice, and all of a sudden i understood why the Minoritenkirche in Krems - a former chruch & great venue btw. - was completely packed and sold out since weeks.

A carpenter’s workshop transforms the sounds of working wood (cutting, sawing, and fixing together) into genuine small objects with the help of a “sound lathe”. This machine records audio data coming from real hand-working processes and mixes them with the dust, sawdust and sounds of the workshop to produce unique, one-off, often flawed objects that become a sort of material souvenir of how we construct furniture.

the guest curator of the festival is no less than bruce sterling. you may not connect him with media art but more with cyperpunk - but if you know his novels its quite clear that he is having an elusive good feeling for art. i am especially thinking of the episode in “schismatrix” were lindsay (main character) got the first contact to the just arriving aliens and is accidental perceived as an artist as he caused an explosion:

“yes,” lindsay said. he pointed at the screen. “notice the subtle shading effect where our recent blast darkend the sculpture.”
“we noticed the explosion,” the alien said. “an unusual artistic technique.”

and conspire. was even the theme of this years transmediale. but the fact that an artwork is incomprehensibly not necessarily means that it´s conspirativ - some works in the exhibtion were hard to /unpack - not only because of a missing text which might give you an idea. But i think it´s a strange human habbit anyway to try to comprehend everything. and if you need to satisfy your understanding of art reception - insert a coin.

after a short introduction of pd by derek holzer, who also curated the worskhop series together with Martin Howse, we started to play around with the small digital theremin boards connected either via arduino board or via the standard mic/line input of our computers… pretty cool stuff the small digital theremin boards - because of digital tuning of the two oscillators it is very convenient and usefull even for installations, because there is no need for manual tuning which is a problem for analog theremins. so this was really a very good and interesting workshop which i was happy to attend. it was organized by pickledfeet and they are very active in knowledge transfer - so watch out for upcoming events.

little advice in the end : don´t try pd on macbooks with leopard yet - it nearly destroyed my computer, because it didn´t go to sleep mode after i closed it.

The Transmediale Festival 2008 “Conspire” will open it’s doors next week. The Festival runs from 30th of Jan till 3rd Feb 2008. The Openng will take place im “Haus der Kulturen der Welt“on Tuesday evening. A detailed Programm is ready for download here.

We will have a look behind the curtains and provide you with Artist and Organizer interviews Videos as well as workshop documentation from the Club Transmediale, which already starts today. The program of CTM as well as Transmediale look really interesting, also the festival moved back to the HKW - we’re eagerly looking forward for this one!

By exploring subversive artistic methodologies and developing (counter-) conspiratorial strategies to uncover new forms of expression and digital discourse CONSPIRE… will attempt to enter the increasingly prevalent yet ambiguous worlds of network induced narratives, cryptic environments and speculative inquiry.

Another upcoming Festival is the Share Festival in Turin, Italy. It run from 11th - 16th of March. The Guys from Share Festival will also organize events at the c-base during the Transmediale, check them out here.

The cybernetic model visualizes existing interrelations of social processes and spatial dimensions. Two elastic layers made out of fabric are held vertically by threads and can be moved by computer-controlled motors. Movement within a certain radius around the object is tracked by sensors.
The position and distance of a person defines the algorithm of how the layers change their form. Between the layers a continuously changing landscape will appear; deformed, distorted (constrained) space, an organism starts breathing, a living-thing reacts on its environment; a pulsing body communicates.

It#s not easy to make your way trough the programme but it’s definitively worth a try. Especially the fact that a lot of exhibition and presentation venues are temporary art residences free of charge - very interesting story! it looks like it’s actually possible to get a temporary (unused) place to work on art projects. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open and try to get some more detailed information’s on this issue - a good time and place to find out more about this would be the vernisage of Franz Xavers exhibition “Biosphären” on Thursday 28th of November in the Lerchenfelderstrasse 65 - this place is used as a “Präkarium” since 2003, looks like a good place to start..

It has been developed by The Game of Life , Wouter Snoei and Jan Trützschler von Falkenstein, together with Raviv Ganchrow who did the hardware-development. Based on SuperCollider it works with wave field synthesis and has a specially developed graphical interface for positioning of the sound.

A lot of people not only during the day-time, but also the shows were sold out every night! thousands of people everywhere… mostly dutch of all ages, baby’s to granny’s - they were all there. the dutch people are really the most friendly and helpful people i’ve ever met: yesterday i even got driven home on the backseat of a bicycle - thx walter ! i really enjoyed the people and atmosphere a lot at the festival!

Tracks in electr(on)ic fields, gestures transformed into data, codes that set bodies in motion, prescriptions that ask to be interpreted. Pretended or real identities spread like viruses as they are carried across networks by (un)controlable, commercialised and personalised information services, inhabiting borders and embodying rumours.

I participated to the stream team here and propose some workshop on build DIY electromagnetic antenna, plus some live and intervention in the street.

One of the objective of the festival is to think and work on the archives and memory system to activate and keep alive all the data after an event.

after that i started to check out the exhibition… wandering around and had lots of fun… in the beginning i was sceptic about the dimension of the festival and the luna park approach, but actually i liked a lot how the people used the interactive works. it was no such shy distance like in other art exhibitions, where people just look, or maybe very carefully touch. the people really use it and even start to invent new ways of playing around. so it’s a hardcore-test for all interactive works here… after a very interesting and intensive exhibition and my exhausting travelling i was to tired to see the music-program, which was a pity, because there was a very good international lineup ! … so i missed modeselektor

It’s is kind of similar to the Arduino board with one big difference: It will be recognized by the system as a USB HIDevice, which means that you can get the data from the sensors into max/pd/suppercollider easily using the [hidio] object.

It’s based on a PIC processor, so you can of course also program it in both C and assemler - if you can. The Create USB Interface is available pre-built and bootloaded for $50 on the Create USB Interface homepage. There are also the schematics and part-lists available for download if you fancy soldering it on your own.

Yves Degoyon and Lluis Gomez and presented their recent pdp development PDVJ “pure data visual junk” - it’s all about image processing and visual work within pd that include helpful objects like a colorgrid to pick a color or a videogrid that shows all the videos of a folder.

also opencv (opencomputervision) will be included in pdp in something like a month. Its in full developement at the moment, they were finishing the pdp_opencv_blob object (a blob detection object) right before the talk, so this is cutting edge information. i can’t wait for this one.

also i’ll finally have to get a new computer because all the pdp stuff is done for linux - it also works on osx, but since you have to run X11 on aqua it will not be as fast as on linux. becaused it seems to be loads of work, it’s not planned to port it to window$

because of dependency problems it won’t be included to pd-extended, you’ll have to install it on your on.

One of the most beautiful installations i have seen within the last years.

The installation uses a long piece of rope to make a 3-D representation of a group of waves floating on the space. These waves generate sound because of the physics of movement, so sound and images are linked, making only one shape: the rope which creates the volume, creates simultaneously the sound when the rope cut the air.

This video installation is possible by combining video projection with physical computing. The projected image will be divided in five parts. The light spots in the video are responsible for controlling the movements of the mirrors and synchronizing the movement of the (virtual) video-image and the (real) mirrors

Arougate is an installation that involves the environnement of the space he is invited to hunt in. Arougate is a digital beast who hunts information, tracks it, feeds on it, and generally reacts to it. Arougate behaves like a wolf when he eats his preys ; no one can disturb him without consequence.

Wahlkabine und kreuzt dort seine Stimmen auf dem Papier an. Dafür
bekommt er einen Digitalen Wahlstift ausgehändigt. Der elektronische
Stift zeichnet über ein für Menschen kaum sichtbares Muster auf dem
Stimmzettel auf, wo auf dem Papier der Wähler seine Kreuze macht. Der
Stift wird anschließend in eine Auslesestation gesteckt, um das
digitale Kreuz vom Stift über ein Kabel auf einen Laptop zu
übertragen. Im Laptop werden dann die Kreuze zu Stimmen umgerechnet.
Am Wahlende wird aus den gespeicherten Kreuzen ein Ergebnis
errechnet, welches dann über einen Drucker ausgegeben wird. Aus
Gründen der Ausfallsicherheit werden alle Stimmen zusätzlich auf
einem USB-Stick gespeichert.

Laut dem neuen Hamburger Wahlgesetz sollen dabei ausschließlich die
vom Wahlstift aufgezeichneten digitalen Kreuze als Ausdruck des
Wählerwillens gelten, das Papier dient nur als wählerberuhigende
Dekoration. Folgerichtig werden die Stimmen auf dem Papier auch nur
in 17 der ca. 1300 Wahllokale zur Überprüfung nachgezählt. Stimmen,
welche nicht mit dem Digitalen Wahlstift, sondern erkennbar mit einem
herkömmlichen Kugelschreiber oder Füller abgegeben werden, gelten als
ungültig und werden aussortiert. Bei einer Differenz zwischen der
Stichprobenzählung und den digital ermittelten Stimmen zählen deshalb
nicht, wie vom Wähler erwartet, die Stimmzettel, sondern die vom
Computer ermittelten Ergebnisse. Bei der Briefwahl werden die Stimmen
von zwei Wahlhelfern mit dem Digitalen Stift nachgemalt, um damit
ebenfalls ein computergestütztes Ergebnis zu ermitteln.

Mit dieser Konstruktion wird dem Wähler nur eine Papierwahl
vorgegaukelt, de facto findet aber eine Computerwahl mit allen
bekannten Risiken und ohne Nachprüfbarkeit für den Wähler statt. Der
Hamburger Wahlstift reiht sich so nahtlos an die umstrittenen NEDAP-
Wahlcomputer, die gerade in den Niederlanden wegen zahlreicher
Sicherheitsprobleme und mangelnder Nachprüfkeit des Zustandekommens
des Ergebnisses abgeschafft wurden. [1]

Um die technische Sicherheit des Digitalen Wahlstift Systems (DWS) zu
belegen, wurde ein Schutzprofil nach den sogenannten Common Criteria
erstellt, einem Standard der eigentlich zur Standardisierung von
Teilbereichen der IT-Sicherheit, nicht aber für Wahlsysteme
entwickelt wurde. Die Verwendbarkeit von Common Criteria für die
Beurteilung von Wahlsystemen gilt demzufolge unter Experten als
äußerst zweifelhaft. Aufgrund dieses Schutzprofils soll nun eine
Baumusterprüfung durch die Physikalisch-Technische Bundenanstalt
(PTB) stattfinden. Gegenstand der Prüfung soll dabei die
Auslesestation und der Wahlstift selbst, die Software auf dem Stift
sowie die Auswertungs- und Zählsoftware auf dem Laptop sein. Die
Prüfung umfasst jedoch nicht den Drucker, den Laptop, auf dem Windows
XP als Betriebssystem laufen wird, und die zentrale
Auswertungssoftware beim Statistikamt Nord. Die PTB hatte schon die
Wahlcomputer der Firma NEDAP für Deutschland als sicher eingestuft,
welche in den Niederlanden gerade aufgrund von Sicherheitsbedenken
komplett aus dem Verkehr gezogen wurden.

Eine Manipulation der Wahl durch Innentäter, also etwa durch
Wahlhelfer, Administratoren der Behörde für Inneres oder Mitarbeiter
der Herstellerfirmen wird im Schutzprofil per Definition
ausgeschlossen. Der Sprecher des Chaos Computer Club, Dirk Engling
sagte dazu: “Die Ignoranz gegenüber der Innentäter-Gefahr entlarvt
das konzeptionell falsche Herangehen an computerisierte Wahlvorgänge.
Es erinnert an einen Flugzeugbauer, der bei der Konstruktion mal eben
die Erdanziehung vergisst und sich nachher wundert, dass das Flugzeug
nicht abheben kann.” Die von Hersteller und Hamburger Senat
getroffene Annahme, dass es keine Innentäter geben wird, die eine
Wahlfälschung versuchen würden, disqualifiziert die
Sicherheitsannahmen für das System vollständig.

Eine Veröffentlichung der Software des Digitalen Wahlstiftsystems und
damit der zu Grunde liegenden Technik ist nicht vorgesehen, womit
eine öffentliche Prüfung durch unabhängige Sicherheitsexperten
unterbunden wird. Kritische Aussagen der Verfassungsexperten Dr.
Stephanie Schiedermair und Prof. Dr. Ulrich Karpen werden ignoriert.
Auch Warnungen von Sicherheitsexperten wie Prof. Dr. Klaus Brunnstein
und dem CCC wurden als theoretisch oder populistisch abgetan. “Die
Geheimniskrämerei erinnert fatal an das Vorgehen bei NEDAP-
Wahlcomputern, offenbar unterschätzen die Hamburger
Entscheidungsträger die Sicherheitsprobleme und haben aus dem
Desaster im Nachbarland Niederlande nichts gelernt”, sagte CCC-
Sprecher Dirk Engling.

Obwohl der Chaos Computer Club vom Hamburger Wahlleiter kein
komplettes System für eine Analyse erhalten hat, konnten anhand der
verfügbaren Informationen und durch Untersuchung der Basistechnologie
des Wahlstifts, dem Anoto-Digitalstiftsystem, eine Reihe von
schwerwiegenden prinzipiellen Mängeln identifiziert werden. Dabei
wurde das grundlegende Problem computergestützter Wahlen - die
mangelnde Überprüfbarkeit durch den Wähler - überdeutlich.

Der CCC hat zur beispielhaften Illustration der vielfältigen
Angriffsmöglichkeiten gegen den Wahlstift für die Hamburger
Bürgerschaft einen trojanischen Wahlstift entwickelt, der äußerlich
nicht als solcher erkennbar ist. Solch ein Stift kann sowohl von
Wählern als auch von an der Wahlvorbereitung und -durchführung
beteiligten Personen unbemerkt ins Wahllokal mitgebracht und statt
dem echten Wahlstift in die Auslesestation gesteckt werden. Der
manipulierte Stift überträgt dann nicht nur digitale Stimmkreuze zum
Auswertungscomputer, sondern agiert als ein sogenanntes Trojanisches
Pferd zum Einschleusen von Schadsoftware. Sobald der Stift in die
Auslesestation gesteckt wird, aktiviert sich ein
Manipulationsprogramm, welches automatisch auf das Zielsystem
übertragen und dort ohne Zutun des Bedieners ausgeführt wird. Das
Programm kann nun problemlos Manipulationen auf dem Auswertungslaptop
vornehmen, indem es z. B. die Position der digital gespeicherten
Stimmkreuze verändert, das Endergebnis verfälscht, speichert und
ausgibt.

“Der trojanische Wahlstift ist nur einer von vielen verschiedenen
Angriffen gegen das Wahlstift-System. Es geht hier nicht um das eine
oder andere Sicherheitsloch, das noch irgendwie gestopft werden kann.
Das prinzipielle Problem ist, dass der Wähler bewusst in die Irre
geführt wird. Ihm wird eine Papierwahl vorgegaukelt, die in Wahrheit
eine unsichere und intransparente Computerwahl ist”, sagte CCC-
Sprecher Dirk Engling.

Vor dem Hintergrund der prinzpiellen und sicherheitstechnischen
Probleme des Digitalen Wahlstifts, insbesondere der mangelnden
Überprüfbarkeit durch den Wähler, fordert der Chaos Computer Club den
Hamburger Gesetzgeber dazu auf, das Wahlstiftsystem aufzugeben.
Selbst mit massiver Nacharbeit an den heute sichtbaren
Sicherheitslücken ist das System prinzipbedingt nicht dazu geeignet,
die Anforderungen an Wahlen in Deutschland zu erfüllen.

My lecture covered a brief introduction to the work of the Serbian filmmaker Dušan Makavejev, a founding member of Yugoslavia’s oppositional “Black Wave”, famous for his groundbreaking films of Yugoslav cinema in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Makavejev’s breakthrough and international recognition came with W.R.—Misterije organizma (W.R.—Mysteries of the Organism, 1971), a film that he described as “a fantasy on the fascism and communism of human bodies, the political life of human genitals, a proclamation of the pornographic essence of any system of authority and power over others.”

They choosed the best place for such an event - the Technopolis, in gazi. the place used to be a old factory, a gaswork and has very special athmosphere… not only because i love old factories. It doesn´t have this very nice fucked up style like arsenale in venice anymore, but for the biennial they importet italian style - the area has been transfigured by the italian architect group called Gruppo A 12.

the venue is seperated in 6 parts/buildings - called days - two german artists start day 1 with destruction ! On seven screens you can see the videoinstallation “Detonation Deutschland” - blasting buildings after 2nd world war in germany. whatelse happens on day 1 - ahh, chaos of course - that´s at least the propagated common sense about graffiti sprayers and left wing groups… sorry, we mixed something up, wasn´t that all before day 1 ?! anyway, it´s not about building something - maybe they wana destroy athens in 6 days ! that´s also why there is no day 7 !? or what happens if u leave the exhibition ?! Ok, so in day 1 there was a chaotic room installation with loads of pictures on 3 screens - 6 hours loop, and psytrance and other partyflyers on the wall - Total Freedom !! is what they want. void network

On day 2 you find a lot about greek culture. artists and philosophers reflections…. democracy - demos kai kratia - people and power !? aja, what i said in beginning - the government is still the same and even the king is back ! thank god only in an installation of edward lipski (UK), called “the king” The most impressed i was by Stelios Faitakis, a young greek artist, who is master of painting contemporary orthodox icon

A human body is standing on a platform which functions also as a big electromagnetic-field-sensor. Projections on the walls are like digital shadows with the viewpoint of a classical architectual principle (front- and side-view). These shadows consists of a physical modelling structure as an equivalent of the human body. so the image and the sound are reacting on the emf of the body, who reacts like an antenna… if somebody is getting closer the sensors recognizes the interference in the emf and affect image and sound of the installation. it´s a combination of performance and interaction.. dive into the performance as the actor not only passive spectator…

GRL - L.A.S.E.R. Tag

after being famous for their LED throwies actions in NY in 2006, this years big hit of the graffiti research lab was presented at the ars, the GRL L.A.S.E.R tag system. a beamer, a tracking unit and a small sound system are packed on this tricycle in order to make use of all the urban projection screens available. easy to install, funny to use. i had the chance to join them on a tour through linz industrial area - unfortunately i’m not able to cut the video right now, it will be available in 2 weeks.

Dash Macdonald - In Your Hands

i couldn’t join the performance and actually see how it works but the craftsmanship of this peace is really impressive. referring to the milgram experiments of the 70ties dash gives his the control over his movement in the hands of the audience by letting them control the movement of his roller skates via a remote control.
apparently dash macdonald is a student in the 2nd year of his studies at the RCA in london - keep an eye on that guy..

Andreas Steinhauser - md4-200 Drone

you can’t hear it but it can see you. i’ve seen some attempts to build something similar, but compared to this machine they all fail. it’s not the concept thats impressing about this project, it’s the fact that it works and it’s there that is alarming. the drone costs around 10000€, but andreas steinhauser presented at the 23c3 aleady a self-made drone they managed to build for 1000€. this is the video from the presentation at the 23C3, i show this one because he is explaining while presenting the drone. an german tv bulletin is ready for download here.

it basically produces human excrement without a human body. the machine is fed with everyday food, and the excrement that it produces can not be differentiated from human shit - even not in laboratory tests.

the windows are open for a good reason, because when they weren’t this piece of art/shit took over the whole 1st level of the o.k.center, so try to imagine the olfactory part of the piece.

as i mentioned before, the show is overwhelming. beside of all the well known exhibition venues, this year the “marienstrasse” is also used as an exhibition space on something like 30 spots, which gives the whole festival a complete different look and feel. i like - but still: impossible to cover all oft the stuff, so we’ll just pick out our personal highlights and present them here. according to this, this will be - at least my - first & last 2ndlife post:

VIP is a nice plyful installation, representing all the state of the art realtime tools like ir camera motion tracking, max/msp and vvvv. For me, this is a typical master class project: technically perfect resolved, great design, but no story or meaning. but still: it’s great fun to play with this installation and my guess is that this project will be seen on quite a lot of events like this in future and as a matter of fact was already shown with great success at the BIP festival.

this is exactly what the guy’s from the Streamfest are doing: organizing a media art festival in a wonderful area - that has never heard about media art before.

In the region of Salento - at the very bottom of italy - the Streamfest happened from 26th to 28th of july. the location suited the kind of event very well - a 60ies style concrete building industrial building, now used as a cultural center.

We had a very warm welcome and i have to admit that the italien way of celebrating a festival limited my abilities of covering the festival, so i decided to show a nice little collection of works that were presented there.

my resume: the lack of visitors was a problem caused by the fact that the theme of the festival is new to the region, the event itself was well done with great efforts in details like DJ sets and artist support.

actually i really enjoyed this installation, maybe it was the still little child in me that likes to roam around in backyards, pick up worms and try to get them moving on my arms.
in this installation you can have this feeling in a clean digital way, if you touch the screen the litle creatures are starting to cross the border of the screen and crawl along your hands…so cute!

douglas gordon and philippe parrenos portrait of zinedine zidane left me with a profound impression.
the film has a length of 90 minutes and shows the football player, keeps close focus on him during the match of real madrid contra villa-real on april 23rd 2005. only very short wide shots of the stadium, the field and halls, and parts of the television emission interrupt the camera close-ups on zidanes feet and face.
this shift from the usual football match perception of the whole team as a unit and the ball as center point of attention towards the close-up observation of a single person acting and reacting to the happenings on the field has tremendous impact.
what at first seems like a steady close-up, including surprisingly clear sound from the field and clearly audible zidane, later develops into more and more layers of perception.
we see zidane not only playing the ball, after a while we notice that he remains highly concentrated, but then you can almost see his thoughts shifting as the attention level drops because theres nothing going on close by, or him getting very agressive due to a failed pass. and suddenly he also seems nervous, although he remains quite serious throughout the match.
through slowly noticed changes in the soundscape (main contributor to the soundtrack are british soundscaperock artists mogwai) or the minimally set subtitles gordon and parreno add even more layers to the portrait. suddenly the inner eye sees zidane as a boy playing backyard football, or we hear his reflections on the character of being a pro football player on the huge field with this humongous crowd.
for me this film can not merely be called a simple portrait, it is a carefully assembled composition of impressions, sounds and feelings, more reluctant that a conventional desription of a famous person but poetic in its narrative and developing unusual perspectives on zidane and football. maybe for this the addition: a portrait of the 21st century. a very poetic one.

even though sonar is mostly known for the electronic music part we are arty eneugh to almost skip the music part and go straight on to the multimedia section. clearly for our coverage we will focus on that “mostly” secret part of the festival!
the multimedia section was split into: sonarmatica, sonarama, sonarcinema, sonarextra and sonar a la carte.( wow what fantastic creativity of name creations) sonarmatica the multimedia exhibition features the topic magic. sonarama takes place in the casm (centro de arte santa monica) and shows high level multimedia live performances. sonarcinema: the name stands for itselfs and finally sonarextra presents external exhibitions.

now with the experience of all the different components of the festival, its quite clear that the day part is the much more sophisticated one. of course the nightly sessions have amazing names to offer, but the huge number of people and the humongous size of the stages (four) provokes nightmare-like impressions. you feel quite anonymous, lost and like a walking wallet. furthermore, to top the size of the halls they put an autodrom into the fetival area! no joke!

but suprisingly the day program is challenging, acts like khan of finland, planningtorock, fm3 featuring blixa bargeld (video) and even the buddha machine startled us. their unusual performances were presenting more than performing only music but going into various levels of performance art.

it was quite easy to be reminded to organize everything in time because of huge smiley posters all over town.
the smiley symbol seems to be the main merchandising source this year. we have a number of different theories about the use of this icon. for one it is a trademark and we were wondering if there is a connection involving loads of money. also it was widely used as a symbol for the 80ies acid house movement. an this brings us directly to the last reason: (as you might remember) there were a huge amount of xtc pills that had exactly this symbol engraved
also we had to discover that now this festival is as far from underground as vienna is from the sea.
not that it is only the fault of sonar, as we had a big phantasy of this cool festival that it can surely not fit. and partly because, well, only one phrase: SELL OUT!
almost immediately after the “your payment was recieved” mail the follow-up message told us about the wonderful world of SONAR merchandising this year. the flagship item is the somewhat boboesque adidas-SONAR-vinyl bag “free” for acreditation holders (of which finally we are proud owners) yupiiieeee.

and in good old bobo attitude the guy next to us (of course he was viennese) stated that the vinyl bag really is quite small (we estimate a maximum of 8 discs fit into the bag - good for minimal techno or style but bad for turntabelists)
we found out that the sum of 3500€ buys you a place in the bag for your own commercial insert. the bag exists in a limited edition of 4000 pieces. that’s nearly 1 euro per bag, man *:D
as you can see from the picture, they could’ve spent more thoughts or money on the design.

after our first contact with the festival (so far we only picked up our bags) we as tagr.tv members officially tag the smiley logo as “not be used again in the next ten years”. we are quite pessimistic concerning the future of our sms conversations.

as an endless number of smileys pass by, the capitalist character of the festival becomes more and more evident.
with the price of almost 50€ per night for entering (if you buy single tickets), we were wondering how expensive drinks will be on the inside. so we are already making plans how to smuggle in huge amounts of beer, but no worry, we have our super special SONAR bags and are allowed using the super special “accreditations only” entrance.

the installation is in the entrance of giardini. a tent, camping table on top the product. Bernhard stands in front, wearing mirrored sunglasses.
his multiple is in basic art for artists, giving you an ease of pain when you suffer from opening paralysis and curator dependencies.
He travels all major art festivals promoting his project, and we just like him…

Entering the russian pavillon. Shower is an interactive installation, where tv footage floods down on the spectator. Reflecting on the media overkill of our time, ponomarev works with aesthetic brilliance and uses old fashioned technique embedded in an multimedia environment. Pulling the armatures one can regulate the speed of the pictureflood. The content itself is mixed with news, entertainment, porn, musicvideos etc.

Belgium. An enormous glass labyrinth, the artist explains his work on 10+ videoscreens, shows how to walk thru it. the special tension on this is how the space is being divided into small pieces, we all know mirror labyrinths. the guideance of the artist himself, being present on synchronized screens all over the installation, lead by the tremendous telepresence of eric duychaerts does the rest.

Here we see some real simple, but popular pieces. About 100 dart plates, were people throw and throw, created by jacob dahlgren. Tried to get my turn, but couldnt wait. In the right corner i see a sculpture made of generic windows by sirous namazi, as well as the steel sheet sculpture. He must be a frustrated architect or something… Jk

we’re at the dutch pavillon. aernout mik shows some recent works, where he reflects on the situation in a nationstate during ‘the age of paranoia’. multichannel video screens, severe police training, kids wearing uniforms, all in all overwhelmingly set up.

we are all confronted with the situation, that nations restrict the civil rights, homeland security and common mistrust. is there a real threat, or do nations only use this scenery to fundament their status quo? you decide..

… Repetitation. The swiss pavillon shows a hybrid between classical paintings and video art. On a huge wall, rotated app. 45 degrees towards the spectator, i see surrealistic paintings of faceless, naked women eating chickenwings, while overlayed by 3d renderings. I can definitely state the fact, that yves is a better painter than 3d modeller. But who cares
